The last day of Hang Da market

Hang Da market was one of the oldest markets left in the modern Hanoi. It is going to be destroyed in a couple of days and than tranformed into a 13-staged supermarket. The company which owns the site evacuated some 500 vendors out to a tempolary market in the schedule of 10 days - starting November 28th.

It was November 27th...

 

A clothes shop on the 1st floor which moved out before the evacuation started. Right behind the frame of what was once a shop stand was another shop, still filled with cloths.

 

 

An old vendor next to her stand. She said that she would move out in the afternoon, after the worship ceremony - "to get permission of the Gods to move out". Vendors like her believed that the ceremony would bring them luck.

 

 

The ground floor. An emty space among shops that were still working. Most of the people in this area sold shoes and various kind of food.

 

 

A guard sitting in the shade at a pathway joining the two buildings of the market. It was not a crowded day.

 

 

A working testing electricity lines in a kiosk at the tempolary market, roughly a kilometer away from the old site. The very first people who moved here were clothes vendors.

 

 

A clothes shop ready. Each kiosk was 6 metter square large only. This one was combined from two detached kiosks, making a 12 metter square stand - yet there was still not enough space for the goods.

 

 

 

A wet and shady lane within the old market. This scene will never be seen again, as the construction of the new 13-staged building will start soon.
